About
Hi! I’m Jenny, a sustainable textile artist and designer originally from Atlanta, GA.
Born to parents from opposite ends of the Appalachian Mountains, I learned how to crochet around 5 or 6 years old and how to sew not long after. I grew up visiting my grandparent’s family farm every year and learned how to sow, grow, and harvest different plants. My siblings and I also learned some basic mending like sewing on buttons and fixing split seams.
I started an Etsy shop after moving to Seattle in 2008 to sell my crochet and knit pieces. My two dogs and I lived near Pike Place Market, and I was inspired by all of the unique handmade items in all of the vendor booths. I used my own crochet bags to pick up groceries in Pike Place and carry them home and these became one of the first items in my shop. After moving to Atlanta in 2013, I took a course in Entrepreneurship and earned certificates in Sustainable Fashion. I had a regular booth at several farmers markets around the city before attending Georgia State University to earn a BFA in Textiles. I graduated in 2017 and had several odd jobs circling the field until I finally landed at Tulipcake Embroidery. I worked my way up to Chief Executive Artisan and learned how to operate industrial, multi-needle embroidery machines. In 2019 I began mentoring fashion students at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) at the Atlanta campus. I gave lectures on sustainable fashion as well as teaching workshops in hand knitting, sashiko stitching, wet felting, and creating shapes with fabric and stitching.
I began making knitwear for Peter Jensen, a renowned fashion designer from Denmark. His singular and avant-garde aesthetic and upbeat outlook have meant so much to me and have helped me take my work to another level. Most recently I moved to Providence and began an MFA in Textiles at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in the fall of 2024. What I'm hoping to do is bring the sustainability of the Appalachian lifestyle and aesthetic to more people and to add my voice to those trying to make our world, and fashion in particular, more sustainable.
